1. Why not just take the guns off and junk the rest?
2. Why not lift the ship right out of the water and put it next to Polly Woodside?
3. Why not fill Cerberus with foam and float it up to Polly Woodside?
4. Won't placing the guns on the sea floor, even temporarily, ruin them?

1. Why not just take the guns off and junk the rest?
The guns are by no means the most important feature of the ship. The turrets are of greater significance with the breastwork deck and low freeboard also being important. The muzzle loading guns were actually a backward step from the earlier unsuccessful experimentation with breach loading guns.

2.  Why not lift the ship right out of the water and put it next to Polly Woodside?
Cerberus is in too shallow water and protected by a reef for heavy lifting equipment to get close to it. It is extremely heavy with up to 10 inch armour plating.

3.  Why not fill Cerberus with foam and float it up to Polly Woodside?
The section of the hull below the armoured belt is basically not there any more. As there are basically no sides below the armoured belt it is not even possible to fill the hull with foam.

4.  Won't placing the guns on the sea floor, even temporarily, ruin them?
Heritage Victoria's conservator has advised that placing the guns in sea water will actually allow salt to be leached out of the metal. Presumably the salt concentration is, after 76 years exposure, now higher than in the sea water. Wrapping the guns in plastic will prevent marine growth on them while under water.
