Lieutenant J. F. Young, who took charge of the naval office in South Australia last week, has had an interesting career. He was born in London in 1867, and arrived in Australia in 1886. Prior to joining the Victorian naval forces in pre-Federation days, Mr. Young was in the mercantile marine. He served with the Victorian naval forces in China during the Boxer rebellion in 1900-1, and saw active service in South Africa with the Victorian Mounted Rifles.
In 1914 he was a member of the first naval and military expedition to New Guinea, and upon his return remained in the forces. When the Commonwealth took over the naval forces Lieutenant Young remained on the staff at headquarters, Melbourne, and in 1911, when compulsory training was instituted, he was transferred to the staff in Sydney, where he remained until 1914, when he was pro (sic)
a half years he has been sub-district naval officer at Launceston, where he remained for five years. Then for the past two and a half years he has been sub-district naval officer at Port Melbourne. Lieutenant Young paid an official visit to his Excellency the Governor on Saturday.
