Under the heading "Naval Politeness" the Melbourne "Age" relates the following incident:- Commander Kingsford has set cyclists and others who offend agaiust the city traffic regulations a standard of behaviour. He was riding along Fllnders street last Tuesday week on the wrong side of the road, when the following Chesterfieldian colloquy passed between him and the police---Constable Strickland: " I beg your pardon; you must dismount." Commander Kingsford- "Certainly. What is it?" "You are riding on the wrong side of the road." "Really, I did not know It." "What is your name and address?" "There is my card-Commander Kingsford, R.N., H.M.V.S., Nelson." This conversation was recounted in the District Court, when the summons, which was issued against the naval commander in respect of his offence, came on for hearing. Commander Kingsford, In marked contrast to most cyclists, appeared in court and admitted the offence. He said that he was quite unaware that he was offending, and he acknowledged the courteous treatment he had received from the constable. Mr. Nicholson, P.M., made no comment, but imposed the usual fine of 5s., which was immediately paid.
