Listed in the Naval Training Ship for Boys Register - 1868-1876 for 1868 as a crew member of HMVS Nelson as opposed to the Naval Training Ship Nelson.

Isaac Franklin joined the Royal Navy in 1861 and first served on HMS Illustrious. Isaac was off the Cape of Good Hope on the 1st of April when recorded in the 1861 census on board HMS Harrier, possibly on the way to the Maori Wars in New Zealand.

After returning to Britain, Isaac form part of the delivery crew of HMVS Nelson and arrived in Victoria in 1868. Isaac lived in Williamstown until around 1883, when he started as a lighthouse keeper. While living in Williamstown Isaac was on the rates notice as being a ‘Naval Instructor’- which was most likely in conjunction with the Victorian Naval Reserve/Brigade.

Details provided by Joan and Joanne Iser.

* 1853 is given as the commencement date for the Victorian Navy as this is the year that Commander Lockyer (RN) went to Britain to superintend the building of HMCS Victoria.
Although the Victorian Navy ended in 1901 the career of Cerbeus etc continued. In 1910 the new ships started arriving & manning levels increased.

Information & photographs of men who served in the Victorian Naval Forces is eagerly sought. Please contact the webmaster.
