ProfileLast Name: | Struttle | First Name: | Charles Cullen | Rank: | | Birth Date: | | Branch: | Volunteer Naval Brigade | | Charles Cullen Struttle
Charles Cullen Struttle, was an ex-Lieutenant in the H.E.I.C.S., who lived upon his pension, and such occupation as he got at Swallow and Ariell's biscuit factory, and it is said he retired to rest not quite sober, and no doubt was stifled, and burnt to death almost in a state of unconsciousness. It is said he was a member of the Naval Brigade, and Mr. Sub Inspector Ryall is using every effort to procure the recognition by the military authorities of the deceased, and a suitable funeral to be given to him. I understand that he left the service on account of a post-prandial mess difference, which resulted in the calling out of his superior officer, the major of the regiment, and his being invited to resign his commission on half pay. It appears that the first attention of the police was directed to the possibility of any one being on the premises, but being assured that all were out, they turned their attention to keeping order and saving property.
Ballarat Star, 3 July 1868 |
* 1853 is given as the commencement date for the Victorian Navy as this is the year that Commander Lockyer (RN) went to Britain to superintend the building of HMCS Victoria. Although the Victorian Navy ended in 1901 the career of Cerbeus etc continued. In 1910 the new ships started arriving & manning levels increased.
