Mr. Alex. Paton, of Ferguson-street, has shown us an, old photo, taken by Mr. Andrew Rider in 1863. It depicts the members of the local Naval Brigade Drum and Fife Band, whose conductor was Mr. C. Farmer. With the exception of the drumnmer (Mr. W. Selvidge), all the members were lads about 13 or 14 years of age. Theiir names are:- Tom Murray, John Kilgour, Isaac Rees, John Taverner, C. Bath, Teddy Sinith, J. O'Keefe, J. Moore, J. Gibbs, A. Patton, Mat. Elliott, W. Farmer, E. Roche, J. Dalton, J. Burridge.

The big drummer in the Naval Brigade band, was accidentally drowned on 2 November 1869. He was an old resident of Williamstown and leaves a widow and several children totally unprovided for.

* 1853 is given as the commencement date for the Victorian Navy as this is the year that Commander Lockyer (RN) went to Britain to superintend the building of HMCS Victoria.
Although the Victorian Navy ended in 1901 the career of Cerbeus etc continued. In 1910 the new ships started arriving & manning levels increased.
