John Shannon

Stoker

Research and identification by Wayne Saillard, B.A. (Hons) History.

While in Malta on 28 November 1870 James Breaks diary recorded:- "Boat coming off to ship full of men upset. Shannon drowned, a good man."

Contrary to the impression given by the entry in James Break's diary, Shannon had actually drowned at around 23:00 hours on the day CERBERUS arrived at Malta (Sunday, 27 November 1870) as attested by the death certificate. According to local custom, the body could not be buried until twenty-four hours had passed from death. As a result, the burial took place on Tuesday, 29 November. No headstone was ever placed on the grave. Wayne Saillard carved and positioned a headstone on John Shannon's grave on the anniversary of John's burial on the 29th of November 2012.

John Shannon's grave is located  in the Ta' Braxia Cemetery, Malta.

John Shannon's Death Certificate

* 1853 is given as the commencement date for the Victorian Navy as this is the year that Commander Lockyer (RN) went to Britain to superintend the building of HMCS Victoria.
Although the Victorian Navy ended in 1901 the career of Cerbeus etc continued. In 1910 the new ships started arriving & manning levels increased.

Information & photographs of men who served in the Victorian Naval Forces is eagerly sought. Please contact the webmaster.
