Chief Leading Stoker
James Hobson (1844-1916) who joined the Victorian Navy in 1882 was a stoker on the HMS Nelson that year. Subsequently he is recorded as a crew member of the Cerberus throughout the 1880s, employed variously as a stoker, leading stoker & chief leading stoker, & he was awarded a long service medal. James’ brother John (1846-1919) was also a stoker on the Cerberus in the 1880s.

* 1853 is given as the commencement date for the Victorian Navy as this is the year that Commander Lockyer (RN) went to Britain to superintend the building of HMCS Victoria. Although the Victorian Navy ended in 1901 the career of Cerbeus etc continued. In 1910 the new ships started arriving & manning levels increased.
