Dr. H. Sloggett
On Wednesday Dr. Harry Paynter Sloggett passed away at his home, Canterbury Road, Middle Park, at the age of 75 years. Dr. Sloggett was a native of Cornwall, and came to Australia 50 years ago, and lived most of the life in Middle Park, and practised his profession locally and in Collins Street. Most of the time he has been connected with the Navy, first the Victorian, and later the Australian. He was in medical charge of the Port Melbourne and Williamstown Naval Depots during the late war; and only recently retired from the service of the R.A.N. with the rank of Surgeon-Commander. Dr. Sloggclt was unmarried, and lived a very quiet life. His chief interest outside his professional work and his Naval activities were in connection with the Masonic craft.
The remains were cremated at Fawkner on Thursday; and, in addition to the ordinary service, the Masonic ritual was observed.
At the South Melbourne Council on Wednesday Cr. Nuzum carried a motion of condolence.
Record (Emerald Hill), 21 August 1937 |
* 1853 is given as the commencement date for the Victorian Navy as this is the year that Commander Lockyer (RN) went to Britain to superintend the building of HMCS Victoria. Although the Victorian Navy ended in 1901 the career of Cerbeus etc continued. In 1910 the new ships started arriving & manning levels increased.
Information & photographs of men who served in the Victorian Naval Forces is eagerly sought. Please contact the webmaster.P0WERED by: DaDaBIK
