R. Pounds

Gunner

On 5 August 1890 the Cerberus log recorded "Landed hands off duty for funeral party for Mr. R. Pounds late gunner R.N."

"A boy named Thomas Roberts, of the Protestant Orphan Asylum, had fallen a distance of some twelve feet down a stoke hole, and it was the greatest wonder imaginable he was not killed. As it was, he struck a piece of iron work, which inflicted a very nasty gash just above the temple, laying bare the bone in three places, fortunately not fracturing the skull.

He was carefully attended by Mr. Pounds and one of the young ladies in charge of the school, and subsequently by Dr. Nicholson, from Ballarat, who happened to be on board. Subsequently, his wound was dressed at the Hospital, and he was sent home. It will probably leave him marked for life, and, as said before, was a miraculous escape."

The Geelong Advertiser, 5 September 1871

* 1853 is given as the commencement date for the Victorian Navy as this is the year that Commander Lockyer (RN) went to Britain to superintend the building of HMCS Victoria.
Although the Victorian Navy ended in 1901 the career of Cerbeus etc continued. In 1910 the new ships started arriving & manning levels increased.

Information & photographs of men who served in the Victorian Naval Forces is eagerly sought. Please contact the webmaster.
