"In May 1859, while getting underway at Port Albert, Lieutenant Charles Gascoyne noticed 24 year old Constable James Spargoe had been drinking. He was using bad language and seemed in danger of falling overboard. He was repeatedly ordered below. Gascoyne reported that Spargoe emerged on deck after five minutes and said 'Mr Gascoyne you are not in the bloody [Royal] Navy now', and shhok his fist in the officer's face. Gascoyne then walked forward. 'He followed me with both his fists closed and grinding his teeth'. Spargoe was dismissed."

Article in Journal of Police History, vol. 3 no. 1, March - May 1995 by Ian MacFarlane.

* 1853 is given as the commencement date for the Victorian Navy as this is the year that Commander Lockyer (RN) went to Britain to superintend the building of HMCS Victoria.
Although the Victorian Navy ended in 1901 the career of Cerbeus etc continued. In 1910 the new ships started arriving & manning levels increased.

Information & photographs of men who served in the Victorian Naval Forces is eagerly sought. Please contact the webmaster.
