Andrew Calderwood Johnston Sharp

Training Seaman

Details and photo courtesy of Andrew's great grandson, Stuart Sharp.

Andrew Sharp was born in Glasgow, Scotland on the 2nd January, 1865 and was 5’ 5’, fair complexion and had blue eyes. He had vaccination scars on his arm and probably tattoos on both wrists and hands. Andrew was sworn in to the Victorian Navy on 16 April 1885 and served for approximately six months. He was discharged for,”not being required any longer”, most likely as the 1885 War Scare had passed.

As family history states that Andrew accompanied the Victorian Naval Contingent to China in 1900 this is most likely the Able Seaman A. Sharp (Pt. Melbourne Naval Brigade) listed in the Volunteer Listing kept by CPO Goding & held by grandson Lawrence Dilks, Williamstown and prepared by Ada Ackerly, Directory Williamstown Museum, c 1987 and in Bob Nicholl's book Bluejackets and Boxers, Allen & Unwin, Sydney 1886.

* 1853 is given as the commencement date for the Victorian Navy as this is the year that Commander Lockyer (RN) went to Britain to superintend the building of HMCS Victoria.
Although the Victorian Navy ended in 1901 the career of Cerbeus etc continued. In 1910 the new ships started arriving & manning levels increased.

Information & photographs of men who served in the Victorian Naval Forces is eagerly sought. Please contact the webmaster.
