John O'Toole was born in Co. Wicklow Ireland on or about 16 May 1859. On his marriage certificate 3rd January 1889, John stated his residence as HMVS Cerberus. John's grandson says that John was an Able Seaman and that he may have changed the spelling of his name from Tool to O'Toole

This record states that John entered the Victorian Navy on the 3rd of July 1884 and was discharged by order of the Minister of Defence about 1896 owing to a reduction in the strength of the Naval Forces. This record states that John was born on the 16th of May 1860.


 

Twelve years in the Victorian Navy, prior to nine years in the Light House Service until at least 1903.

* 1853 is given as the commencement date for the Victorian Navy as this is the year that Commander Lockyer (RN) went to Britain to superintend the building of HMCS Victoria.
Although the Victorian Navy ended in 1901 the career of Cerbeus etc continued. In 1910 the new ships started arriving & manning levels increased.
