Transferred from the Naval Training Ship, HMVS Nelson, to HMVS Cerberus as a crew member on 22 March 1873.

Frederick McGill was committed in the ordinary manner by the Melbourne Bench as an uncontrollable child on the 12th December 1872 and an order was made against the father at the same time for the payment of 7s 0d weekly. The father paid 14s. on December 1872 21s. in January 1873 and 21s. in February. On the 22nd March the boy, with his fathers sanction joined the Cerberus and was then discharged from the training ship [Nelson]. There were then arrears due for his maintenance to the amount of £2 16s. For these Mr McGill was summoned and he paid the amount into Court on the 27th instant.

* 1853 is given as the commencement date for the Victorian Navy as this is the year that Commander Lockyer (RN) went to Britain to superintend the building of HMCS Victoria.
Although the Victorian Navy ended in 1901 the career of Cerbeus etc continued. In 1910 the new ships started arriving & manning levels increased.
