James Marshall

A man named James Marshall, attached to H.M.S. Victoria, was arrested by the police on Wednesday night on a charge of desertion. He had been allowed absence on leave, which expired on the Wednesday morning, but on the previous evening he went to the Victoria and took away all his clothing, those on board having no power to delay him, as his leave of absence bad not expired. He then engaged a boatman from Sandridge to carry him to the ship Lorenzo, which was about to sail for Callao, which it appeared he had shipped into for the voyage to that port. Upon his arrival at the vessel, the officers, finding he was in the uniform of a seaman attached to the navy, refused to take him on board, and thus he had to return to shore, where he was arrested. The police handed him over to the officers on boadthe Cerberous (sic), whera he was to be treated as a deserter from the navy. He managed, however, to desert again the next night.

Williamstown Chronicle, 8 February 1879

* 1853 is given as the commencement date for the Victorian Navy as this is the year that Commander Lockyer (RN) went to Britain to superintend the building of HMCS Victoria.
Although the Victorian Navy ended in 1901 the career of Cerbeus etc continued. In 1910 the new ships started arriving & manning levels increased.

Information & photographs of men who served in the Victorian Naval Forces is eagerly sought. Please contact the webmaster.
