This first voyage was aboard the HMVS NELSON a warship which was being delivered to Victoria to initiate a naval fleet.

On a visit to Australia is Mr. A. P. Whiter, one of the original crew of H.M.V.S. Nelson, the first warship commissioned in the navy of Victoria. He is 82, and has a family of 14 children. He served in the Royal Navy until he retired in 1895, but on the outbreak of the war, despite his age, he promptly enlisted, and was made second in command of the submarine base at Lough Swilly. Northern Ireland.

* 1853 is given as the commencement date for the Victorian Navy as this is the year that Commander Lockyer (RN) went to Britain to superintend the building of HMCS Victoria. Although the Victorian Navy ended in 1901 the career of Cerbeus etc continued. In 1910 the new ships started arriving & manning levels increased.
