Charles Watkins

Boy

Peter Griffith (grandson of William Henry Watkins) advises us that William Henry Watkins, Henry Watkins and Charles Watkins were brothers and all served in the Victorian Navy.

Charles is listed in the ships crews list for the ship Innamincka, an Adelaide based ship, but in this list, it was sailing from Cooktown to Sydney, the ship arrived in Sydney on 25th December 1898. my grandad Charles was just aged 16 years at this time. So he must have finished with the Innamincka about this time, as his name was on the Cerberus crew list as signing up on the 2nd March 1899, just a couple of months or so after he had signed off from the Innamincka.

More details on this person can be found in the Victorian Navy Certificates of Service This is a very large pdf file of 119 mb and takes 13 minutes to download with a 1.5 mbps internet connection.

* 1853 is given as the commencement date for the Victorian Navy as this is the year that Commander Lockyer (RN) went to Britain to superintend the building of HMCS Victoria.
Although the Victorian Navy ended in 1901 the career of Cerbeus etc continued. In 1910 the new ships started arriving & manning levels increased.

Information & photographs of men who served in the Victorian Naval Forces is eagerly sought. Please contact the webmaster.
