Oliver Richards

Chief Gunner

"Mr. Oliver Richards, a brother officer and intimate friend, has taken charge of Mr. Groves's affairs."

The Argus, 7 March 1881.

"A letter was received from Gunner Tubbs, with reference to the evidence which he gave before the board. He stated that Mr Richards, who alternately with him takes charge of the Cerberus, is a chief gunner in the Royal Navy, and holds a commission as such. It is not uncommon for ships of the Cerberus class to be in charge of a gunner, as Mr Richards was in charge of the Gorgon, the sister ship of the Cerberus. Gunners in the Royal Navy have frequently to do lieutenants duty and pass an examination to qualify them for the duty."

The Argus, 17 September 1883

"Mr. Richards, R.N., who has completed his engagement with the colonial Government, returns to England by the Rosetta to report himself to the Admiralty."

The Australasian, 29 September 1883

* 1853 is given as the commencement date for the Victorian Navy as this is the year that Commander Lockyer (RN) went to Britain to superintend the building of HMCS Victoria.
Although the Victorian Navy ended in 1901 the career of Cerbeus etc continued. In 1910 the new ships started arriving & manning levels increased.

Information & photographs of men who served in the Victorian Naval Forces is eagerly sought. Please contact the webmaster.
